On 27th November 2024, the Biogas Plant Project was officially launched at New Wing Prison, marking a significant step toward sustainable practices within the correctional system. This initiative was supported by the GEF Small Grants Program UNDP, the Mauritius Research and Innovation Council (MRIC), and implemented in collaboration with the University of Mauritius and Association Kinouété.

The biogas plant, an eco-friendly innovation, processes vegetable and organic waste to produce natural gas for use in the prison kitchen. This technology not only reduces waste but also offers a cleaner and renewable energy source. The project addresses key environmental challenges, including effective waste management and the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy, reinforcing Mauritius’ commitment to sustainable development.

The launching ceremony was inaugurated by Honourable Rajesh Anand Bhagwan, Minister of Environment, Solid Waste Management and Climate Change, alongside Junior Minister Honourable Joanna Marie Berenger and Honourable Karen Foo Kune-Bacha. Mrs. Pamela Bapoo Dundoo, National Coordinator of the GEF Small Grants Program UNDP, also attended, joined by representatives of the collaborating organisations, including Nishika Padiachy-Payendee, Director and Dominique Chan Low, M&E, Advocacy & Policy Executive of Association Kinouété.

This project exemplifies the power of collaboration in addressing environmental challenges, offering a scalable model for institutions seeking greener and more sustainable solutions.
